Selection criteria

What must the polyurethane system do?

For an adhesive bond, assess both joining parts, their surfaces and the load on the joint. A two component polyurethane construction adhesive is processed after mixing and cures by reaction. A flowable polyurethane casting resin is instead used to embed or encapsulate electrical components. The number of components alone therefore does not define the function. Working time, fixturing and cure must fit the particular product and production process.

SELECTING FOR YOUR APPLICATION

Assess parts, process and service conditions together

For polyurethane construction adhesives, surface condition and preparation affect the bond. The specified two component 3M Scotch-Weld DP 620 NS requires dry surfaces free from dust, oil and release agents; the parts must be positioned or held during curing. These details apply to this product and cannot be assumed for every polyurethane adhesive.

Electrical assemblies call for a different decision when they are potted: 3M Scotchcast 226 is described as a polyurethane resin for potting and casting, with low viscosity and electrical properties in wet and dry environments. Assess geometry, service conditions and the protection required. Separate categories cover potting compounds and sealants. Tell us about your parts and process requirements so that we can assess product suitability with you.

POLYURETHANE SELECTION QUESTIONS

How do polyurethane adhesives differ from polyurethane casting resins?

A polyurethane adhesive joins parts through an adhesive joint. A polyurethane casting resin fills, surrounds or embeds components. 3M Scotchcast 226 is specifically described for electrical and electronic potting and casting; its low viscosity helps it fill cavities. That description does not establish general suitability as a construction adhesive. Selection therefore starts with the required function and the geometry of the application.

How can I tell whether a two component polyurethane adhesive fits my production cycle?

Check the product specific working time, time to handling strength and time to full cure. For 3M Scotch-Weld DP 620 NS, the manufacturer specifies a working time of 20 min at room temperature for a 10 g mix, handling strength after 4 h and final strength after 48 h at room temperature. These are different process stages. Also establish how long the joined parts need to be held and the temperatures at which you will process them.

Which surface details matter for a polyurethane adhesive bond?

Specify both materials, any coatings and the actual condition of each surface. For 3M Scotch-Weld DP 620 NS, the manufacturer requires dry surfaces free from dust, oil, release agents and other contamination; preparation depends on the desired bond strength and environmental exposure. The same document excludes PE, PP, POM and PTFE for this product. Suitability cannot therefore be inferred from the word “polyurethane” or a broad material group alone.

What information should I include in an enquiry about polyurethane adhesives?

Describe the function, both joining parts and their surfaces, joint or potting geometry, load, service environment and processing steps. State when the assembly must be handled or loaded. For potting, electrical requirements and the sensitivity of the components also matter. Krückemeyer GmbH can use these details to assess the relevant product group and manufacturer information with you; suitability and processing depend on the selected product.
